Microsoft has unveiled a significant initiative to bolster the cybersecurity defenses of European governments at no cost, addressing the escalating threat landscape, particularly from state-sponsored actors leveraging advanced technologies like AI.
On June 4, 2025, Microsoft announced a comprehensive program aimed at enhancing intelligence-sharing on AI-based threats and assisting in the prevention and disruption of cyberattacks. This move comes in response to a surge in cyberattacks across Europe, many attributed to state-sponsored actors from nations such as China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia.
Brad Smith, Microsoft’s President, emphasized the importance of bringing American-developed cyber protection tools to Europe to strengthen their cybersecurity infrastructure. He noted that while adversaries are employing generative AI to scale malicious activities, Microsoft is leveraging AI as a defensive tool and is committed to ensuring that its AI products are not accessed by known cybercriminals. The company actively monitors the misuse of its AI models to prevent such scenarios.
This initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader commitment to Europe’s digital resilience. The company has pledged to expand its European data center capacity by 40% over the next two years, investing tens of billions of dollars across 16 countries. Additionally, Microsoft has appointed a new Deputy Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for Europe to oversee compliance with emerging cybersecurity regulations like the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), the NIS 2 Directive, and the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).Furthermore, Microsoft has committed to training 100,000 individuals in Europe with cybersecurity skills over a two-year period, focusing on underserved communities and aiming to address the cybersecurity talent gap in the region.
These efforts underscore Microsoft’s dedication to enhancing Europe’s cybersecurity posture and digital sovereignty amidst an increasingly complex and threatening cyber landscape
