Microsoft has released a new optional update for Windows 11 24H2, known as KB5060829. This update includes 38 improvements and bug fixes, and it’s available now for users who want early access to new features. Since this is a non-security preview update, it’s okay to skip it if you prefer to wait until the official release next month.
One of the most interesting additions in this update is the PC-to-PC migration feature. This allows users to move their files, apps, and settings from one computer to another more easily. At the moment, only the setup screens are visible, but Microsoft plans to fully support this feature during the setup process in a future update.
Another helpful improvement is the option to have smaller taskbar icons. Windows can now automatically shrink icons when there’s limited space, or users can choose to keep them small all the time. You can adjust this setting in the Taskbar settings under Personalization and then Taskbar behaviors.
There are also performance improvements in this update. File Explorer has been optimized to extract large compressed files more efficiently, which means it should now be faster and less likely to slow down when handling ZIP files.
The Windows Search feature has also been improved. Many users had noticed that searching on their PC could be slow or laggy. This update improves the search performance, making the results appear faster and making the system feel smoother overall.
Another major fix focuses on Windows Hello. Some users had trouble logging in with facial recognition or fingerprint sensors. This update corrects those problems, making it easier and more reliable to log in using these methods.
Microsoft has also fixed an issue with the Quick Settings panel, which sometimes wouldn’t respond when clicked. Another problem was related to printing, where certain printed lines appeared thicker than expected. Both of these issues have now been resolved.
For users who type in Japanese, the update includes a fix for a keyboard input issue. In some cases, characters didn’t appear correctly when typing. This has now been corrected, improving typing accuracy for users who write in Japanese.
Gamers will benefit from a fix to a bug where using ALT and Tab during gameplay could freeze other open windows. That problem is now fixed, allowing smoother switching between games and apps.
Some users who use Hebrew or Arabic language settings experienced app freezing or crashing. This update resolves that issue as well, improving system stability across multiple languages.
There is one known issue that users should be aware of. If you use Chromium-based browsers like Chrome or Edge, and your system is displaying Chinese, Japanese, or Korean characters at 100% scaling, the fonts might appear blurry. Microsoft recommends increasing the scaling to 125% or 150% as a temporary workaround while they work on a permanent fix.
To install the KB5060829 update, open Settings, go to Windows Update, check for updates, and look under the optional updates section. Once installed, your system will update to Build 26100.4484. It also includes the latest servicing stack update (KB5062862), which improves the reliability of future updates.
Stay alert, and keep your security measures updated!
