Mozilla has announced a new update for its Firefox browser that gives users more control over generative AI features. With the upcoming Firefox 148 release, users will be able to turn off all AI-powered tools using a single click. This change is aimed at people who prefer a simple and distraction-free browsing experience. The update is scheduled to roll out on February 24, 2026.

In recent versions, Firefox has introduced several AI-based features to improve browsing, such as smart summaries and chat tools. While many users found these features useful, others were not comfortable with AI being built into their browser. Mozilla says it received feedback from users who wanted the option to browse without AI. The new setting is designed to respect those preferences.
The update introduces a new section called AI Controls in Firefox’s settings menu. Inside this section, users will find a single switch labelled “Block AI enhancements.” When this switch is turned on, all generative AI features in Firefox will be disabled at once. This also stops Firefox from showing prompts or suggestions related to AI tools.
One important detail is that this switch does not only affect current AI features. It also blocks any new generative AI tools that Mozilla may add in future updates. This means users who turn off AI once will not need to adjust their settings again later. Their preference will remain active even after browser updates.
For users who do want some AI features but not all, Firefox also offers individual controls. Each AI tool can be managed separately and set to enabled, available, or blocked. This allows users to customise their browsing experience based on their comfort level. The one-click option simply makes it easier for those who want everything disabled.
The AI features covered by these controls include webpage translations, AI-generated alt text for PDFs, smart tab grouping, link previews, and a sidebar AI chatbot. The chatbot can connect to different AI services if the user chooses to enable it. If the main block switch is turned on, none of these tools will run.
Mozilla says the goal of this update is to give users choice rather than forcing AI on everyone. The company believes people should decide how much AI they want in their digital life. This approach is different from some other browsers, where AI features are harder to fully disable. Mozilla sees user trust and transparency as a priority.
With this change, Firefox becomes one of the few major browsers to offer a complete one-click option to disable generative AI. Users who like AI can still use it, while others can enjoy a clean and traditional browser. Overall, the update reflects Mozilla’s focus on user control and flexibility in an AI-driven internet.
