Federal prosecutors have charged a New York man in a cyberstalking case that highlights the growing misuse of artificial intelligence for online harassment. Authorities say 21-year-old Anthony Belford carried out a months-long campaign targeting a college student in Georgia. The case has drawn attention because it involved both AI-generated nude images and fake online identities used to damage the victim’s reputation.
According to court documents, the alleged harassment took place between January and March 2025. Prosecutors claim Belford created multiple fake social media accounts designed to impersonate the victim. These accounts were reportedly used to spread false information and create confusion among people connected to the student’s college community.
Investigators say the fake accounts were also used to send racist messages while pretending to be the victim. The goal, according to prosecutors, was to convince others that the student had personally written the offensive content. Authorities allege that the scheme was intended to damage the victim’s reputation and create problems within the student’s social and academic circles.

On June 3, a federal grand jury indicted Belford on one count of cyberstalking. He later appeared in federal court following the indictment. Prosecutors have not publicly disclosed additional details about the victim, identifying the individual only as a Georgia college student in court records and official statements.
