In a press release published on 22 October 2026, Interpol detailed the results of a major international law enforcement initiative known as Operation Serengeti III. Conducted between June 29 and August 31, 2026, the operation targeted prevalent cyber threats across 21 African countries, leading to widespread arrests, the recovery of substantial illegal funds, and the dismantling of thousands of malicious digital infrastructures.

The international sweep was coordinated by Interpol alongside authorities from participating nations, with critical support from private cybersecurity partners including Team Cymru, Kaspersky, Group-IB, and Fortinet. The initiative focused heavily on disrupting various forms of digital crime, including business email compromise schemes, ransomware deployments, and large-scale online scams.

Throughout the multi-month operation, authorities achieved significant operational milestones against regional cybercriminal infrastructure. Law enforcement agencies successfully dismantled 10,909 malicious networks and identified 65,929 victims, while overall financial losses across the targeted campaigns were estimated at over $385 million. Through coordinated interventions, investigators managed to recover more than $105 million in illegal funds and detained 1,462 suspected cybercriminals.

Specific country-level actions highlighted the diverse nature of the threats tackled during the initiative. In Uganda, law enforcement dismantled two transnational fraud rings and arrested 365 individuals linked to online investment and pension fraud. Meanwhile, authorities in Angola targeted illegal cryptocurrency mining centers, resulting in nine arrests and the seizure of over 2,000 mining devices.

Additional actions included an operation in Nigeria where law enforcement arrested one individual running a phishing and business email compromise operation. This specific suspect had harvested software credentials and amassed approximately 2.1 million email addresses, demonstrating the scale of individual malicious nodes contributing to broader regional cybercrime networks.

The successful conclusion of Operation Serengeti III underscores the importance of cross-border law enforcement cooperation and public-private partnerships in combatting sophisticated cyber threats. Security teams and organizations operating within the region are advised to maintain robust monitoring protocols, enforce credential management best practices, and collaborate with industry partners to mitigate ongoing digital fraud risks.
